[15:53:43] Matt Pennington: In Morrow there exist numerous natural magical auras that remain untapped for a variety of reasons: one such in western Peregro cannot be tapped because it lies beneath a series of geysers and hot springs. This has long proven a challenge to Architects as to how one might tap the magic without ruining the natural phenomenon that lies above it.
Recently, a talented young journeyman named Camilla Sunspire proposed that the mana site should be foregone in favour of enhancing the beauty of the natural springs. She proposed an intricate arrangement of pipes to channel the flow of water into a fountain which would rise to a crescendo at both Dawn and Dusk (rather than every four hours, twenty-seven minutes, as the natural geyser). This was considered a very middling prospect because while the pattern of the fountains did accurately display both the time and the time of day, one would have to be very familiar with it to gain more information than by looking up at the sun.
While her work was initially dismissed, either inspiration struck or else she consulted another Architect who has elected not to claim joint credit. Her thesis grew to include an even more intricate network of mithril pipes that thrust down into the active magical field. By cycling the water through the magical field, a careful balance of trace elements would draw forth a portion of the energy which would coalesce into crystals over time in a series of fonts.
At this point, the Magi re-examined her proposal and found it to be both skillful and virtuous. When Senator Cato proposed in Winter 378 that a sinecure be constructed, the work of Camilla Sunspire was brought to the Civil Service's attention and the delighted Architect was provided with the budget and materials to prove herself.
The duties of the Fountain Keeper include maintaining the balance of trace elements, performing minor calibrations to the valves based on the average rainfall, and selecting the 'seeds' around which the mana crystals will form. A small staff of ushabti are kept on hand to help extract coins, debris or other mementos thrown in by travellers who do not understand the fountain's purpose. --> |
