Overview

This title is appointed by the League Assembly

The Map to the City Below is an Imperial title awarded to a citizen of the League. The motion to construct - and cede to Sung - the Chamber of Euphony was raised by Genoveva Barossa d'Apulian, as the Senator for Spiral, during the Spring Equinox 387YE.

The Map to the City Below has a responsibility to encourage the spread of magic, music, and mystery in Apulian, and oversees the Chamber of Euphony. The title was created as a result of an opportunity presented in the The play that came to Apulian wind of fortune.

Responsibilities

The Map to the City Below is responsible for encouraging the spread of magic, music, and mystery in Apulian. In addition, if the Chamber of Euphony were to come under threat, it would be the responsibility of the Map to the City Below to respond to those threats.

Powers

The holder of this Imperial title has two powers that they can employ provided that Sung is not under emnity.

The Map to the City Below has access to a ministry, which allows the holder to purchase crystal fire at a set price. The Chamber of Euphony is visited by several heralds of the Spiral Dancer, and they are willing to sell shards of the dark mineral. The Map to the City Below makes their decision on how much money to spend during downtime from their character page. Money is removed from, and vis is placed into, the character's inventory when the downtime is processed.

Effigy of the Night Singer

The Map to the City Below also receives an ambergelt effigy each season that can be used to submit a question to Sung, using the ritual Clear Counsel of the Everflowing River.

Sofonisba Amilcara of the City Below, Map to the City Below

Favoured by Sung

The current holder of this title, Sofonisba Amilcara of the City Below, is favoured by Sung. As a result of this patronage, they enjoy additional powers above and beyond those granted by the Chamber of Euphony. If the Conclave elected a new Map to the City Below, the eternal would choose who gained and who maintained these powers.

Bound to the City

Sofonisba is now bound to the city and benefits from a unique gift from Sung. There is some uncertainty as to what being "bound" to the city actually means.

The current belief of Apulian magicians is that the Map will usually be the first to know if the city is threatened by an eternal. Or that the Map will know about any threat as soon as Sung does. Or that Sung will know about any threat as soon as the Map does. At least one of those things is definitely true, possibly all of them. Straight answers are rare with some Night eternals, and none more so than the Lord of Illusions.

This favour may grant Sofonisba additional information each season

Sofonisba is favoured by Sung who holds the magician in high esteem. The eternal includes them in her counsels which mayprovide them with additional information each season.

There is no magical basis for this favour, so it is not possible for magicians to analyse it. The Rainbow Serpent is open about the fact that they hold counsel with Sofonisba in some manner, but only Sofonisba knows what exactly that means.

The Chamber of Euphony

Nothing can be said that can't be sung.

The Chamber of Euphony is an intimate auditorium that was first proposed by Actius of the Deathless Caves. It incorporates a stage and seating with strange acoustics that allow for beautiful, evocative performances of music that supporters find transcendent and spellbinding. Sadly not everyone agrees and some music critics have described performances of even the most popular pieces as "weirdly atonal", "disharmonious" and "the musical equivalent of taking too much goosewhisper infusion".

Despite this division, or perhaps because of it, tickets for performances are always in high demand. On most nights the mortal performers create something that is at least dramatic and impactful - whatever you think of the Chamber, almost nobody is left indifferent by a recital. On rare nights the music is an accompaniment by a dance by the Dancer at the End of Time, a peculiar herald of Sung who lives in the emotion of the music.

Appointment

The Map to the City Below is a national position which is appointed by judgement of the League Assembly.

The Map to the City Below is appointed during the Spring Equinox each year. They can be revoked by the General Assembly, the League Assembly, and the Assembly of the Nine.
