The Pale Chain or White Oak | |||
The Pale thresher is a dolmen made of 5 wagons loads of imperial white granite from the sutton stone quarries, it was transported under cover of darkness and work began rapidly after the autumn equinox summit at anvil. | |||
Whilst commissioned by the Senator for Mitwold, they are not the foreman of the build site, and in fact are not seen at all during its construction. The current foreman is a Landskeeper who leans heavily on his walking stick and his apprentice both where gold stars on their person. | |||
Build site is oddly well guarded, with many seeing yeomanry with Gold stars, and White rams heads on their livery present at the mouth to the well day and night, any who approach asking what is going on is given a sharp tongue and a humble request to go elsewhere. | |||
Occasionally baleful howling can be heard from the dig site, with someone ranting and raving about thieves and liars. | |||
The site is heavily guarded though this didn't deter a band of Feni, come across the region of Hay, and for some reason ignore the village only raiding and attacking the build site... they are repelled, somehow, and again some few days later, a pair of Ogre almost from nowhere erupt out of a local wheat field to attack some of the workers on break, were it not for the local garrison of Fidelis being on manoeuvres they surely would have been devoured... even though they were no longer able to work after the assault. | |||
Many workers fear the project cursed, luckily their Foreman the Landskeeper Gerraint Black, along with his apprentice the Historian Gemma Brightsmith allay their fears, that no curse currently sits on the stones - and were a curse to be laid down, it would certainly be far far away from the dig site by now, perhaps even in the Barrens. This however does not deter many workers leaving, a brief visit from the senator for Mournewold however rally's the few masons still in residence. | |||
It takes nearly a fully month to complete this one project, with workers tired and frustrated, many claim to feel anger and disdain for the rock the well the whole project but this abates after some time away from the well and a good meal, though when it's completed their stands a large Dolmen with a three linked chain under an oak tree carved into it, along with a alien rune that few recognise, and those that do are wise enough not to reference it. As the dolmen is moved over the hole, the howling and screaming begins again, and some builders claim they see a strange lion carved on the bottom of the dolmen. Some of the more frightened builders flee the scene, seeing this howls as an ill omen - other filled with anger throw boiling water from local fires and chips of rocks and stones into the hole, the Master mason is throwing her tools down the shaft in anger when a rope snaps and brings the Dolmen crashing into its resting place, trapping her arm. Her life is saved due to the actions of the Landskeeper, but the marches loses the right hand of the most skilled mason in the nation. | |||

that, all things considered, they are lucky that this is the worst that's happened. | |||
The Local Village of Wayford, celebrate that night, with the Mason and the Landskeepers at the head | |||
of the table and songs and stories as sung and shared all about Wise Mary and Clever Jill about the | |||
Skinned King, and about one Jack-In-Chains...for they know what lived in their well and only strong | |||
land can keep it there - because of course 'Land Matters Above All Else'. | |||
