Marshal of the Pit of Revelations
Overview
The Marshal of the Pit of Revelations is an Imperial title awarded to an Imperial orc citizen. It is a national position appointed by majority vote of the Imperial Orc senators. The position is a sinecure, requiring minimal responsibility but offering a regular income of mana aquired through the maintenance of the waterways that pass through the pit construction.
The Marshal of the pit of Revelations is never dull. Many might pass over this appointment as just another mana sinecure indeed it appears as such. It may also appear as a fighters task one best suited for fists but it is more complicated than that. The Marshal has to be methodical and clever to ensure that access to the pit is available to all, all year round and their fight is not only within the pit keeping watch over eager Legion soldiers who might come to battle the wondrous crystal constructs but around it. They battle a near constant war against the elements and landscape within Scarsind.
It falls on their shoulders to muster their fellows in the feat of clearing up any clogs in the water channels surrounding the pit, that funnel clear pure water down from the mountains into the waterfalls that fall down about it and when the winter melts come, drain the excess water from the purpose made low lying pit and its crystal orc constructions, nobody wants to fight in waist deep water.
As a token of their responsibility, the Marshall is gifted the a portion of the mana that manifests in these water channels or is chipped from the crystal constructs within the pit itself.
Responsibilities
It is an expectation that come hail or shine the Marshal will always keep the pit of Revelations staffed with those who understand the Day realm and possibly even a little artisan plumbing. That they will maintain the ebb and flow of water down and around the fighting pit itself that brings the magic to this place.
More master tactician than general, the logistics of this valley basin and its maintenance is vast. Some might say it was a project better suited to the peaks of Zenith than Skarsind but with enough hard graft and a strong will to expand their growing nation an Imperial orc can make almost anything produce mana.
It takes many hands for the Imperial orcs define their use of the day realm in this way and ultimately that great responsibility falls upon the shoulders of the Marshal of the Pit of Revelations.
Powers
The Marshal has no legal powers, but receives the pick of mana that collects in the waterways and chips from the crystal constructs. From this bounty the holder of the title draws an income of 9 mana.
Appointment
The title is selected by unanimous decision of the Imperial Orcs senators. If a unanimous decision cannot be reached, the title may be appointed by the Imperial Senate instead.
The title can be held by any Imperial Orc citizen. The Marshall has tenure, and serves until they die or step down. They can be revoked by the General Assembly, the Imperial Orc National Assembly, and by the Assembly of the Nine.
The Pit of Revelations
Late in the year 382YE a number of Imperial Orcs among the Skywise banner, chieft among them Skywise Gralka. They were asked to aid in finding the location and construction of a new place to represent the might of Day magic within the growing Imperial orc nation.
When it does not snow in the north of the Empire it rains, indeed the weather of the North can be fairly awful for most of the year but where the water flows there is the potential to harness that power in other ways.
A location was found to the bottom of a valley where this ebb and flow of water could be harnessed and quickly plans began to be drawn up for the pit of revelations. But what is the day magic to an Imperial orc? First plans spoke of mirrors and lofty towers based on those witnessed in distant Urizen or places previously used by the Winterfolk suggesting the incorporation runes and the patterns made by birds that crossed the sky. Though symbolic in their own ways they were not right.
Taking inspiration from magics such as carve the crystal guardian and from lessons that spoke of the Eternal Zakalwe. The idea of having a fighting pit where you sought to master your skills of war began to resonate among the day mages involved. Orc shaped statues carved in crystal were designed. Fighting constructs to be summoned using magic that would be placed around a low lying but flat arena, the floor of which would be patterned with an ever growing constellation like symbol depicting the many places the armies have been stationed since their creation.
The crystal golems would be sorted around a the vast training space. One third were those bearing Weltsilver disc’s with the symbol of the Winter Sun upon their chest, in another the Oricalcum symbols of the Summer storm. Then there were those with a blank green iron disc waiting for a symbol of their own and an army to define them.
From the tallest valley sides, water is channeled around the fighting pit it flows and falls in a sound that roars like thunder and pours gentle as rain as it pools below the arena floor and away. An orc can stand in the pit and their feet are placed upon the constellation of the armies path. An orc can chose to fight a crystal warrior designed to be like those of the second or first legion or the unknown. To hone their skills against the best and in fighting surrounded by the roar of the waterfalls maybe hear something more from their ancestors.
