	For several years, Reikos has known peace. In the wake of the Druj invasion and the expulsion of the rot eternal [[Llofir]] from Tamarbode, its inhabitants have dedicated themselves to the arts of healing and purification. The Gardens of High Chalcis, once a mighty fortification reduced to ruins, now stand as a symbol of restoration and resilience in the face of the horrors that came from the east decades ago.

	Despite the rebuilding, the dedication and the invitation of people from across the Empire to share in mending flesh and spirit, scars still remain. In the depths of a cold winter, rumours spread in Chalcis Mount of seeing spirits accosting the living, of wailing effigies of those killed in the terrible conflict that raged over the land. The ghosts come from many different walks of life, but all have a strand in common; a deep, resentful bitterness over the nature of their end. Some can be mediated with and sent on, others require the specialised attentions of priests armed with liao to restore peace. By themselves, the shades are worrisome but ultimately dealable with. Nevertheless, they are yet another uncomfortable reminder of the bloody history of the territory.

	As the Winter Solstice draws near, priests and exorcists from around Reikos begin receiving flurries of letters from panicked citizens in Chalcis Mount. The number of spirits materialising drastically increases, possibly triggered by events across the border in lost Therunin. Something seems to be drawing these ephemeral phantoms to Reikos and to High Chalcis specifically.

	~~===Cities and Trees===~~

	Reikos is not the only place plagued by these spirits. Away to the north, Holberg - the greatest city in the world - has had almost a decade of liberation, the Druj having been driven out in the same bloodsoaked campaign that freed Reikos. The city has been rebuilt, with wonder and white granite, but scars remain. The district of Holmauer, once a bustling and prosperous suburb in the shadow of the city's great walls, was reduced to poisoned rubble in the back-and-forth carnage that led to the city's liberation. In its wake, the citizens of Holberg transformed the marred land into a park of calm and simple beauty, a beacon for reconstruction efforts across the Empire.

	Shortly after spirits begin appearing in Reikos, there are reports of similar ones walking the paths of the park. The Druj spirits are the same, but the Imperial ghosts take the form of feathered free company veterans and finely dressed builders and scholars, wailing about their cruel death at the hand of poison or flux, lamenting a lifetime of work cut short. On occasion, those deciding to brave the park are startled by ghosts in Dawnish colours, ranting furiously about having taken a Druj spear in the belly.

	In Therunin, the scars of war are much fresher. Ghosts appear here too, but not the spirits of those dead ten years or more. Here, the battle has barely finished, with another likely around the corner. Soldiers and citizens fleeing the Druj onslaught that drove the Empire from the territory and led to the destruction of the Iron Helms and Isaella's Dance can take a step on the trods and be confronted with the visage of a comrade who was felled just a short time before. Navarr guides work tirelessly to keep the spirits high of soldiers and civilians alike, forced to hear the lamentations of fallen friends and family from beyond the grave. Fortunately for those escaping the Druj trap, as the battle recedes into the distance, so too do the malign spirits. The hearts of the Imperials on the march bolstered by the auras of defiance spontaneously emerging on them in the wake of the terrible battle.

	As the date of the Winter Solstice draws near, things begin to move. From Holmaeur Park and the battlefield in Therunin, the spirits begin marching, slowly and inexorably, to some distant point. Priests and exorcists keep an eye on them where they can, wary of changes in unpredictable situations like this. But the ghosts remain the same, frightening those they come across but otherwise leaving no trace. A few exchanged messages and a look at the map reveals that the spirits are seemingly converging, perhaps even making a pilgrimage of sorts, the final destination seeming to be Chalcis Mount.

	Characters who spent time in Holberg, Reikos or Therunin (including characters whose military unit supported an Imperial army there) may roleplay that they have encountered one of these ghosts in the weeks leading up to the event. The ghosts may be someone your character knew, a stranger, or someone long dead. All are ghosts of people who died as a results of the Empire's wars against the Druj, and who are tormented by the cruel manner of their death and some failure in life. You may roleplay that you let the ghost be, talked it down until it accepted its fate and disappeared, or exorcised it using a liao ceremony (this does not cost any of your character's liao). It is possible for the ghost of the same person to appear to multiple people at different times.

	~~While the ghosts are relatively common, it is perfectly possible to have spent time in Holberg, Reikos or Therunin and not encountered them in the offseason.~~
