The team work closely with the medical, conduct and participant welfare teams, in order to make sure that everyone stays safe whilst enjoying the event. In bad weather conditions, they are also responsible for securing tent structures that are at risk, and dealing with other issues that may arise.		We are on duty from 1am until 8am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to make sure that there are members of staff awake and ready to help round the clock. What we actually get to do is variable and unpredictable (apart from walking, of course). Our standard duties are patrolling the site, checking for unattended fires, keeping an eye on the site infrastructure, and helping event participants with any problems that may happen. Sometimes, we have to deal with more serious incidents; other times, nothing happens at all.

			Our main concern is the people. Everyone should be safely tucked away for the night and if we find someone who isn’t, we make sure they reach their home-from-home and have everything they need. When the weather is bad, we also keep an eye on the infrastructure, especially the biggest tents, making sure they are secure. Which means that, after being a good walker, being waterproof is the next most important thing.

			What we like about it is being able to help people (obviously) but wandering around at night offers many nice surprises. We get to see the site like nobody else does, and visit all the nooks and crannies. Nature at night is amazing too: shooting stars, beautiful sunrises, mysterious mists in the forest…

			The Participant Welfare Team plays a vital role at Empire, offering calm, compassionate support to anybody who may be feeling overwhelmed, distressed, or struggling with their mental health during the event. 			We're looking for a few more recruits to join the site crew team to do the litter-picking of the site after the event. The huge majority of our players are really good at cleaning up after themselves - but we still need to sweep the site to try and pick up the missed tent pegs and the bits of rubbish that have been missed or blown. There is always some rubbish that has blown into the farm ditches, and they need to be picked clean.

			It's not a difficult job, and it's not unpleasant for the most part, though it's not a job for the extremely squeamish as there is the odd piece of litter that is unsavoury in nature. There are litter pickers and gloves available for every member of the team. You do need to be able to walk long distances since you need to walk back and forth across the fields repeatedly.

			You don't have to be on-site early unless you want to be, but you will need to stay an entire extra day after the event finishes. We can only litter pick the site properly once everyone has left, so we need the team to start Sunday evening but work through most of Monday to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

			During the event, you're free to play a character and join in with the game as any other player would.

The Skirmish Team runs in two main groups to deliver large military engagements and smaller plot-heavy encounters for players. To continue improving on our current encounters we need a larger team to muster for skirmishes and deliver combat encounters so more players can participate and have fun fighting for the Empire! We stop work each evening by 10 pm, then run through a briefing for the battle the next day. After this is done there is time to rest and relax with the rest of the team, head in character to enjoy Anvil, or take on a volunteer role in late-night low-combat encounters.
