"Hard day in the fields?" Elfrith smiled warmly. "Well, I've got just the reward for a long day in the Sun, but I'm afraid it's not my usual. 4 more rings for a glass - since you're a regular and all."

With some suspicion, the briar counted out a handful more coins and let them drop to the bar. Elfrith scooped them up and gracefully poured a glass of the scummy dark liquid.

The naga picked up the mop bucket in silent readiness.

The briar drank deeply. For a couple of seconds they stood entirely still, eyes closed. Then, in one fluid movement, they grabbed the glass and downed the rest of it in one clean gulp. "Elfrith! This is the finest stuff - how did you get something like this all the way out here?"

"Oh, I have my sources. Genuine Sarvosi vintage. 312YE," Elfrith slipped her hand round the bottle to cover the label and slid it back across the bar. "Let me get you another."

6 more rings clattered onto the bar and the briar staggered back to a crowd of farmhands laughing raucously in the corner. Even from the other side of the pub, Elfrith and naga caught occasional ravings about the flavour of the special vintage as the glass was passed round.

"Now that, Tata," Elfrith took the bucket from the naga and placed it firmly back behind the bar, "is why we give those nice people with the pink powder a discount on drinks."</ic>

Fields of pink flowers bobbing in the fresh breezes of [[Hahnmark]] have become an unremarkable sight these past seasons. The Sarcophan ''Kraft Brothers'' who [[Hyenas_and_herbs#Flowers_in_Frost|spearheaded the project]] to cultivate plants in alpine Wintermark use them to brew a rare Sarcophan narcotic known as ''Viezesmaak''. It is perhaps the worst-kept secret among such farmers that, as well as dealing with the Brothers, there have been agreements with their direct competitor who brews his own strange concoction from the unusual flowers which infiltrate the Kraft Brothers' crop from time to time.

Business has been booming. Despite the entirety of Wintermark seeming to be aware of this situation, there has been no indication that the Kraft Brothers realise a competitor is snatching business from under their noses (not least thanks to some clever manoeuvring during the Winter Solstice in which both sides visited Anvil without becoming aware of the other). The ''Zuredruiven vintners'' have cracked the puzzle of cultivating ''draaikolkbloem'' on a large scale, and now there are choices to be made by the farmers of Wintermark. Large-scale cultivation of ''draaikolkbloem'' would not be possible without the Kraft Brothers becoming aware - and Sarcophan traders are not known for their tolerance of their rivals slipping into their patch.

The Zuredruiven vintners have discovered methods of draaikolkbloem cultivation which can be practised at scale within a herb garden, and they are happy to share the technique for a cut of the harvest. Following ''Bramme van Zuredruiven'''s visit to Anvil last summit, there seems to have been some discussion within the winery about the complex politics of the Hahnmark situation, and another option has been quietly made available.

As long as the public deals offered by the Zuredruivens are not accepted, they offer a subtler deal to the [[herb garden]] owners of Hahnmark. The Zuredruiven vineyards in the Sarcophan Delves invite them to holiday among the vines. There will be an opportunity to sample the finest wines of the Delves (rumour has it these are in fact not particularly fine when compared to [[Astolat]], [[Sarvos]], or even [[Segura|Seguran]] vintages), walk among the vines and learn some of the arts of the vintners. Just as the Marches supplies the Empire with food, so the nation of Urizen provides the Empire with mana crystals. It has long been hypothesised that there is something in the rarefied air that makes it easier to distil mana here. As if the currents of magic were being distorted by a thousand eddies as they are forced to wind their way between the tall mountain peaks.

This is fortune, for there is no doubt that the war against the vallorn will require casting ''quite a lot'' of magic. Great skill will be needed, of course, but skill alone is not enough; a ritual magician must have mana crystals to perform their work. Spurred on by the enticing possibility of actually defeating the vallorn, a chance to build a better for everyone, people dust off old plans first looked at two years ago to increase mana production in Urizen.

''Claudius Nightstricken'', a [[stargazer]] who used to work at the [[Penumbral_Watcher#Tower_of_Light_and_Shadow|Tower of Light and Shadow]] before it was destroyed [[Sound_the_bells#Sodden_Plains|drew up the original plans]]. The plan involved a series of thinly woven mithril nets that could be installed in key points across the steep Ventosi cliffs. They would help to dissipate energy from any future storms, preventing the risk of damage from storms if the curses are needed to attack the Grendel. They would also help to strengthen the flows of magic in the territory, raising the level of investment in every [[mana site]] across [[Redoubt]].

Best of all, the nearby Spire of the Wealdawn will offer support to whoever is appointed to oversee the delicate mithril nets. The plans have been examined and the costs updated to reflect recent changes in the territory, but they would definitely still work. It's a lot of investment, of course, and it would need funds to pay for all that mana, which would have to come from somewhere. The wind blowing through the Senate in recent times suggests that [[The circle game|markets and the like have fallen out of favour]]. But that can't apply to mana surely? Everybody needs more mana - it is ultimately more important than money.

It was [[Morrow#Sunspire_(ruined)|Sunspire]] that served as the centre for learning about the vallorn in Urizen. It was said that if any outside Navarr understood the vallorn, it was the Urizen of Sunspire. Navarri vates were known to visit here to exchange news and knowledge. That all changed after the Summer Solstice 386YE when a [[Ashes#Twilight_(Morrow)|force of Druj]] from Therunin looted what books and scrolls they could before burning the rest of the spire to the ground.

While the Urizen may be struggling with their swooping robes and reliance on Ushabti to make the swamps of the Sarangrave work for them, the Navarr are no stranger to living in conditions where nature is fundamentally opposed to your continued existence. After length discussions with the Urizeni, they draw up plans for a unique commission that combines the best of both national traditions, a wayhouse to protect and shelter people on the trods, but built in the style of a fortified Urizeni citadel. It could be built in Whisperwood, Turan Flats, or Bloodwater Marsh, at least as long as there were no other fortifications in those regions.

In addition to the normal benefits of a wayhouse, would serve as a staging ground a garrison of three thousand Urizeni and Navarr warriors. Sentinels and thorns, training to fight side-by-side against the vallorn so that both nations are ready to face Beantol Dol when it is awoken. Sarangrave is the only territory the Empire has ever controlled which hasn't been assigned to the Navarr - building the Eastern Citadel would be a way to ensure there oathsworn brands be on hand the moment they are need them.

Military units from Navarr, Urizen, and Dawn could take an action to support the garrison patrolling the eaves of Béantal Dol. It would be dangerous work fighting the spawn of the vallorn, but provided the garrison wasn't engaged in battle, the military units would have a chance to claim valuable herbs and forest resources. They would gain the same returns as those that took quest against the vallorn. The Citadel would be a valid target for any rituals that can target garrisons normally.

The architects loved this plan, and added their own ideas; using the trods not only to supply people, but magic too. By using a spiral of ilium nodes to create a grounded magical target in conjunction with the energy being leached via the vallorn-adjacent trods, and staffing it with a series of experienced seers, it would be possible to anchor Urizen's magical dominion over the territory. This would mean that, as long as the Empire held the region that the Citadel was built in, they would still be able to target it with magic from the Imperial regio, even if the Empire lost dominion over the territory. Naturally, this would require the Imperial regio to be able to target territories which they understand had been malfunctioning as of late, but the architects are sure their colleagues who visit Anvil will have no trouble realigning the regio as necessary, if they haven't done so already.

Despite the saga with the [[Navarr]] in [[Brocéliande]], [[Arhallogen|the Scorpion Queen]] is willing make this offer one last time to the [[Archmage of Spring]]. The ''Scorpion Queen'' is clear however that if this offer is not taken, it shall be the last of its kind on this scale. If the Empire turns up its nose at this gift and the Spider King is approached again for significant boons to combat the vallorn then the Archmage and the whole Empire will get a profoundly adverse response. ''Sharp-Fangs'' is patient, but eventually every hunter must ''eat''.

Once the Venom Den was complete, the ''Maw-of-Spikes'' would provide a bounty of 9 vital honey to the citizen they chose to become the Spider Prince. The eternal would also grant a [[Scorpion's Sting]] to whoever they allowed to assume the position each year.

The den itself would be a nexus of interweaving branches that would dig into the ground and rise into the treeline across a wide area. The den would allow huge spiders to lair in the area from where they could be called forth if suitably commanded. The idea of the heralds of the Spider-King fighting alongside Imperial armies to slaughter the vallorn offers clear military benefits. Specifically, all Imperial armies fighting the vallorn in both [[Sarangrave]] and [[Therunin]] would inflict 500 total extra casualties.

There's just one problem - the proposal is currently proscribed - forbidden by judgement of the Synod that condemns all such titles as unvirtuous since they sublimate mortal will and destiny to an inhuman entity. Philosophers can argue the nature of free will but is hard to argue that there are many beings in all six realms more inhuman than the ''Centipede General''.
