Watcher of Britta's Pool

Overview

The Watcher of Britta's Pool was an Imperial title created by the Imperial Senate in Winter 379YE. The position of Watcher is a sinecure, requiring minimal responsibility but awarded a regular income of liao from the civil service do to the many pilgrims making the visit to the pool as well as a number of potions from those who ply their trade at the Pool.

Following the death of Empress Britta in 376YE, heroic efforts recovered her body and many of her effects from the Thule barbarians. The body was interred in the swamps of Kallavesa while her personal accoutrements were placed in a shrine of white granite in Necropolis. In Autumn 379YE, a delegation of Highborn and Winterfolk visited the shrine and removed the personal effects of the Young Empress and reunite them with her body in the swamps. The Pool was created to support the many pilgrims from Wintermark and beyond to allow them to visit Britta's resting place in safety.

Responsibilities

The Watcher oversees the pool dedicated to the memory of the dead Empress, and ensures that it is not disturbed. If the Pool were to be threatened, it would be the responsibility of the Watcher to face those threats; likewise should any opportunity related to the Pool arise the Watcher would decide how to respond.

A Portion of Liao

The number of pilgrims drawn to Britta's Pool sees the Watcher provided with 13 doses of liao by each season by the civil service, to be used as they see fit.

Donations of Tonics

A journey to Britta's Pool is a pilgrimage for the young warriors of Wintermark; Empress Britta is renowned as a competent warrior and an inspiring battlefield commander. This tradition, of visiting the Pool for weeks at a time, is only possible thanks to the actions of the Watcher in keeping it safe, which has led to a booming trade at the Pool - apothecaries buying herbs from the visitors and selling potions and tonics back to them. This arrangement benefits everyone and so the Watcher of Britta's Pool receives three doses of Winterskin Tonic for as long as the Pool remains and the responsibility of the Watcher involves its safeguarding.

Appointment

The Watcher of Britta's Tomb is chosen by a judgement of appointment in the Wintermark national assembly.

The title may only be held by a Wintermark citizen. The Watcher of Britta's Pool has tenure, and serves until they die or step down. They can be revoked by the General Assembly, the Wintermark National Assembly, and the Assembly of the Nine.
